Videos, maps, and feeds: load embeds only after consent

Embedded third-party content — videos, maps, social feeds — may only load after consent. The check distinguishes between a direct embed and a placeholder solution that only loads the content on click.

  • The placeholder solution is the usual approach: instead of the video, a placeholder with a notice appears, and only the click loads the third-party content. What matters is that the placeholder is truly local — a preview image from the third-party server already establishes the connection.
  • The second most common mistake is an embed in the footer that nobody notices: a map on the contact page, a feed in the sidebar. They load along with every visit.
  • The check recognises placeholder solutions by their construction and doesn't count them as a violation — a correctly implemented two-click solution shouldn't be penalised.

FAQ

Is it enough to load the video only when scrolling to it?

No. Delayed loading doesn't change the transmission, it just postpones it. What's required is consent, not a delay.

What about providers that advertise a privacy-friendly variant?

They reduce the amount of data, but they don't prevent the connection. The check flags them as an embed; whether the variant is enough in a specific case is a legal question.
