GEO / AI

Does an FAQ section help my website with ChatGPT and Google?

Yes, an FAQ section measurably helps your website with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and other answer engines. These programs answer user questions, and ready-made question-and-answer pairs on your page fit exactly into that pattern. Our check recognises three forms: dedicated FAQ markup in the page code, expandable question blocks, and headings phrased as questions.

Question-and-answer pairs match how people search

People ask answer engines real questions: "How long does a website check take?" or "What does a seal cost?". A page that poses exactly these questions verbatim and answers them right below gives the machine ready-made material. It doesn't have to laboriously piece the answer together from running text — it can take the pair almost unchanged and link your page as the source. An FAQ section is therefore not decoration, but one of the most effective building blocks for visibility in AI answers. To build one, collect the questions your customers actually ask by phone or email, and answer each in a few sentences.

The machine-readable FAQ markup

In addition to the visible text, your agency can record the questions and answers in an invisible data block in the page code, the so-called FAQPage schema. That's standardised markup that tells machines: "A question follows here, and here's the matching answer." Visitors see none of it, but answer engines prefer to read it. Related markup types count too, such as QAPage for question-and-answer collections, or HowTo for step-by-step instructions. Our check treats each of these three markup types as a full-fledged question-and-answer signal. Building it in is routine work for an agency, and possible with little effort in most website builders and content management systems.

How our check assesses this point

Full marks apply if your page carries FAQ, QA, or HowTo markup, contains at least two expandable question blocks, or has at least two headings ending in a question mark. Expandable blocks are the elements where clicking the question expands the answer. If the check finds only a single question heading or only a single block, it gets half marks, since the pattern is then recognisable but weak. With no question-and-answer structure at all, the check counts the point as a serious shortcoming in the "GEO" area.

  • Collect the five most common customer questions from phone calls, emails, and consultations.
  • Add an FAQ section to relevant pages: question as a heading with a question mark, answer in a few sentences below.
  • Ask your agency to also mark up the FAQ section with FAQPage schema in the page code.
  • Word every answer so it's understandable without the rest of the page.
  • Add to the FAQ section whenever a new customer question keeps coming up.
