A reservation is a real-time event with limited stock; it is excluded. The deadline should still be generous and visible.

How is 2.2.3 different from 2.2.1?

2.2.1 (Stage A) allows time limits if they are disabled, adaptable or renewable. 2.2.3 waives deadlines, except for real-time events.

Why should a website do without a time limit?

At Level A (2.2.1), websites may set time limits when visitors can disable, adjust or renew them. Level AAA criterion 2.2.3 continues: time is not part of a function. A form does not expire, a session does not expire, a quiz does not have a clock. Excluded are events that take place in real time, such as an auction or a live vote.

What the Criterion Requires

No process on the page is bound to a deadline, neither for reading nor for operation. Sessions remain open until the visitor finishes them, or the entries are received after a new login. Forms store intermediates. Tests and exams run without countdown, unless time is part of the exam itself. Non-interactive real-time events, such as a transmission, are excluded because the time there comes from outside.

For whom this counts

People who work with aloud program or magnification need several times the time for the same page. People with concentration problems, learning difficulties or motor limitations as well. A session that expires after 20 minutes and discards all submissions makes a long request unfilled for them. The level A extension option helps, but it interrupts and demands a quick response that exactly these people cannot afford.

The measurement detects redirects with time and updates in the head of the page; She does not see meeting deadlines and expiration of forms. Whether a website can do without a time limit, a person assesses when working through a task. The criterion belongs to the category AAA in knowledge.

At level AAA, time is not part of a function, except for real-time events such as an auction.

Find any place where time matters: session duration, shopping cart reservation, form token, quiz clock, confirmation period.
Save form input on the server side or in the browser so that an expiration of the session does not discard anything.
Prolong sessions silently as long as the visitor is working instead of pushing them for confirmation.
Where a deadline is legally necessary (reservation), call it visible and leave it generous.
